For what it is worth, perhaps Biota should to the crown clade of life on earth, in keeping with other crown definitions. The corresponding total group (however it might possibly be defined... _Homo sapiens_ > smectite?) could be termed Innominata, or Panbiota, or any one of a number of clever names. To continue being clever, Eubacteria and Archaea certainly are clades if we chose to associate these names with explicit, unrestricted phylogenetic definitions. :) On the other hand, is it really productive, at this stage and in this forum, to discuss definitions of established taxon names?
