Subject: Fwd: Dick Olmstead's message/Articles in American Scientist

Kevin's letter appears in the latest (Sept-Oct) issue of American Scientist.

Unfortunately, there is a 0.5 MB limit on messages sent to listservs
administered by Ohio University. I cannot do anything about this.

>Thanks to Dick Olmstead for letting the list know about the article
>on the PhyloCode in the American Scientist. I tried to attach to an
>earlier message a pdf of the article (by Roger Harris) as well as
>one of a message from the President (Lynn Margulis) that criticizes
>the PhyloCode, but apparently they exceeded the file size limit for
>this list. I should also mention that I have sent a letter to the
>American Scientist trying to clarify both Harris' point that the
>traditional rank-based approach was developed by Linnaeus and
>Margulis' criticism that the PhyloCode assumes an inappropriate
>model of evolutionary trees. As background for the first point, I
>also tried to send a separate message with a recently published
>paper comparing nomenclature as it was practiced by Linnaeus and
>other 18th century naturalists with both rank-based and phylogenetic
>nomenclature, but this also exceeded the limit. If we are able to
>increase the size limit, I will try to resend these pdfs at a later
