Subject: revised version of PhyloCode is online
--Boundary_(ID_Hi4rpHulz5uPzuyqEi7htA) Content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Greetings, I just posted a revised version of the PhyloCode. It differs from the Oct. 2003 version (which is still available on the web site in PDF and MS-Word format) in the following ways: Two references were added to the Preface (Mishler 1999, Pleijel and Rouse 2003). The definition of clade (Art 2.1, glossary) was modified slightly. A new Note 4.2.1 was added (concerning peer review). Important: Several changes were made in the recommended wordings of definitions and standard abbreviations in Note 9.4.1. Recommendation 9.4A was reworded. A new Art. 9.5 was added (the meaning of "extant" in crown clade definitions). A new Art. 9.8 was added (use of complex apomorphy as a specifier). Rec. 9E was expanded to cover the citation of an apomorphy in a qualifying clause. A new Rec. 9F was added (use of a complex apormorphy as a specifier). A new Note 11.5A.1 was added to clarify that the reference to naming species in Rec. 11.5A concerns naming them under the rank-based codes. Slight rewording of Art. 11.8. A parenthetical comment was added at the end of Art. 11.9, Example 1 (concerning a complex apomorphy). Several changes were made in Rec. 11C. The reference to form genera was replaced by morphotaxa as a result of the abandonment of the form genus concept in the ICBN. There are several other minor changes in this recommendation. There is a small change in Rec. 11D (addition of a reference to Rec. 11A). There are several changes that make it possible to use an apostrophe as an optional pronunciation aid after the establishment of a name (but clarifying that the apostrophe is not part of the orthography): rewording of 17.1, deletion of 17.1.1 and old 17.2, addition of Note 18.1.2, and deletion of 18.7. There is a change in the definition of paraphyletic in the glossary and a related minor change in the definition of monophyletic. There is a change in the definition of synapomorphy in the glossary. Various corrections in html version of Appendix A (it was already correct in the Word and PDF versions). Various typos and formatting errors were corrected. ------------------------------------------------------------ Various people contributed to these modifications, but special thanks go to David Marjanovic and Michel Laurin for their meticulous reading of the October version and many good suggestions for improvement. Happy holidays everyone. Phil -- Philip D. Cantino Professor and Associate Chair Department of Environmental and Plant Biology Ohio University Athens, OH 45701-2979 U.S.A.
