Subject: Re: Article 11 (and 13, and 17, and 18), specifically Megalosaurus
--Boundary_(ID_njbeGqUFaNylwG0oMKLELQ) Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit The original spelling for the type species of Megalosaurus Buckland 1824 was Megalosaurus bucklandii Mantell 1827, a nomen nudum next spelled bucklandi by von Meyer 1832. Megalosaurus appeared as a Parkinson 1822 nomen nudum (without a species name), and the binomial name Megalosaurus conybeari Ritgen 1826 is a nomen nudum/nomen oblitum. As the concept of a type species, with diagnosis and hypodigm, was relatively unknown then, most of the taxonomy dating from the period has, it goes without saying, been the subject of considerable revision. I am in the process of revising Sam Welles's revisions and descriptions of all of the Jurassic European theropods (with line drawings and photographs of virtually all of the known specimens). Megalosaurus, based upon a disarticulated yet associated skeleton (and not, as some have erroneously claimed, a partial dentary), is clearly diagnosable.
