The only objective measure of relationship is what Darwin so succinctly termed "propinquity of descent," frequently phrased as "recency of common ancestry." I have never seen any reason to doubt that this is what is meant by "related" in any phylogenetic context. However, it might be helpful to explain this in the Code. Wagner
