Subject: Addendum 5: Simultaneous publication of generic epithets
Draft item (Recommendation 10E?) for PhyloCode, Article 10 Recommendation 10E: For consistancy, new names that are published as genus- or subgenus-rank names under concurrent codes should not be registered as clade names until rules for the formal recognition of species-entities are admitted to the Code. This recommendation is not intended to discourage the use of new or preexisting clade names as "placeholders" for the genus-category in Linnean binomials. Example: An author publishing the new genus and species _Phister crunchman_* should not attempt to simulteaneously register his genus as a clade named Phister. However, if he had defined Phister as clade, and no genus name was available for species _crunchman_, he might use Phister as a substitute for the genus. -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Please note, do to the vagaries of the ICZN code, we may wish to substitute a real binomial, no matter how confusing, as publication of this name would create a _nomen nudum_! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonathan R.
