Dear all,
A few ice-ages ago I promised you more info on ICSEB VI and the
work-shop on nomenclature (in particular phylocode flavour and recent
ideas) that Mikael H=E4rlin and yours truely are hosting at this
meeting.
To find out more about the general meeting, please point your browser
at http://www.icseb-vi.biology.upatras.gr/. The deadline for
no-penalty registration is 30 March 2002, so time is as always a
limiting factor=8A
Regarding the workshop, below is a paragraph on its scope. I hope as
many as possible will be attending the meeting in Patras in general
(the symposia looks very interesting) and the work-shop in
particular. If you want to present a talk, you can contact me or
Mikael H=E4rlin (mikael.harlin@ibp.vxu.se), as well as indicating your
intention on the registration form.
Cheers,
Mikael
Taxon names in the bioinformatics age: Phylogenetic nomenclature and
other alternatives
The paradigms in biology have changed considerably since Linnaeus
introduced the binominal nomenclature in the 18th century. In
particular, the view of systematics has tilted from a classification
of things to a systematization of evolutionary histories. Considering
this, de Queiroz and Gauthier proposed an alternative to the ranked,
"traditional" legacy of the Linnean hierarchy as implemented by the
International Codes of Nomenclature. These ideas, now referred to as
phylogenetic nomenclature, in turn has generated some counter
reactions, and nomenclatural principles currently present some
interesting issues.
The aim of the work-shop is to provide a forum for presenting both
theoretical and practical aspects of
- the principles of nomenclature in relation to our views on the nature of t=
axa
- impact of bioinformatics on nomenclature, both as a tool and by new
requirements
